MICA, an acronym for Michigan Internet Communication Association, Ltd., is a privately held corporation founded in May 1994. Eleven respected networking industry experts from Ford Scientific Research Laboratories, University of Michigan and Cisco Systems incorporated MICA in the State of Michigan as a C Corporation under Michigan’s Cooperative Statute. MICA’s foundation was to promote high speed Internet connectivity (T1 speeds and higher) for many of Michigan’s leading Companies and large government organizations. MICA was one of the first Internet Service Providers in Michigan and was one of the first ISP’s to offer commercial Internet hosting services to organizations in the Midwest. In addition, MICA served as one of the regions’ few sources of Internet technology information through its free informational seminars. In 1996, MICA decided to embark on a long-term strategy of aggressive growth through marketing its high speed Internet access and shedding its cooperative structure. As a result, MICA achieved 500% growth in the four years following its cooperative structure.
